What Is Fatty Liver Disease?
Fatty liver disease occurs when excess fat accumulates in liver cells. When fat makes up more than 5–10% of liver weight, the condition is diagnosed.
Two major types exist:
1. Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD)
Develops in people who drink little or no alcohol. Commonly associated with:
- Obesity
- Insulin resistance
- Type 2 diabetes
- High cholesterol
2. Alcohol-Related Fatty Liver Disease
Caused by heavy alcohol consumption.
If untreated, fatty liver can progress to:
- Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH)
- Liver fibrosis
- Cirrhosis
- Liver failure
According to World Health Organization, fatty liver disease is rising rapidly due to increasing obesity and sedentary lifestyles worldwide.
